Anne Brown ArtbizJam

You can join Anne, licensing artists Lori Siebert, Paula Joerling and myself for fun on the beach, a little wine and lots of information about the business side of art licensing as well as creative play time with new techniques!

We want to keep it small so that some of the discussions can be tailored to your specific needs. We are almost full and registration closes August 10.

You can find all the details at  ArtBizJam.com

Among other things, Anne will be discussing the following topics at ABJ.

1. Finding Your Creative Spark. Everyone has one but some have yet to define and commit to it. Anne will discuss the importance of identifying your Spark, what ignites it and how to stay true to it.

2. Share Your Spark. Learn from a Product Developer ! Anne will discuss her perspective of what a product developer wants to see in portfolio presentations and their expectations during development. You will learn how to determine which products best work for your artwork.

3.  Ignite Your Spark. A trending field trip to learn the in’s and out’s of determining trends, plus much more information on correctly predicting trends.

Anne’s Interview:

Why did you want to be involved with ArtBizJam?

When Lori, Paula and Phyllis called me to share their vision for the retreat, I was inspired by their passion and purpose. I was thrilled to be included as a guest teacher.

What will people get out of attending this particular workshop?

I hope the participants walk away with a better sense of their creative purpose and tools to enrich their business and art.

What makes this workshop/retreat special and different from other workshops?

ArtBizJam is a creative renewal that encourages realness, vision and kinship. I love that it was tailor-made for an intimate group of artists who are interested in growing personally and professionally while having a blast doing it!

How do you reconcile your passion of developing product with the business side of art?

My passion and job is developing products with licensed artists and designers. As a Product Developer, it is crucial I am always looking through the lens of my retail customer and end consumer. This means there are times I have to pass on an artist I admire personally because it is not the right fit for my product.

What are you looking forward to fun-wise with ArtBizJam?

I am looking forward to a long weekend of learning, sharing and creativity…on the beach. Our hostesses have taken great care in planning every detail and know this will be a memorable weekend!

We look forward to seeing you at ArtBiz Jam!

Interview (with myself Phyllis Dobbs) for ArtBizJam!

This week we are starting a series of interviews with the instructors at ArtBizJam, which is a creative/art business retreat being held in Destin, FL September 18-22, 2013.  The instructors along with myself are Anne Brown, Director of Product Development at Magnet Works and Studio M and artists Lori Siebert and Paula Joerling. My name was drawn out of the proverbial “hat” to be the first interviewee!

ArtBizJam artist retreat

Why did you want to be involved with ArtBizJam?

Conducting a retreat has been in my mind for quite a while. I love attending retreats and enjoy teaching so it was natural to want to host one. This one came together almost as a product of a magic wand being waved with some fairy dust – the four of just all wanted the same thing and were so excited about it. As a teacher at ArtBizJam, I feel that I will get as much out of it as will the students. Any time you meet someone and network, you automatically gain from it, whether you are the teacher or the student.

What will people get out of attending this particular workshop?

The attendees will benefit on several levels. They will have fun and create cherished new friendships and an experience that they will treasure. They will learn how to improve their business to get it to the level that they want as well as work smarter with their business side. Working smarter makes us more productive while giving us more time to enjoy the benefits of being creative. And the attendees will also relax and rejuvenate by being being creative in new areas, taking these techniques and incorporating them into their creations. Taking time to creatively play will give you the energy and spark to create new ideas. We have some fun surprises that will delight everyone there – you will love every minute in this beautiful gulf coast area.

What makes this workshop/retreat special and different from other workshops?

Most workshops focus on only one area of your business, mostly taking creative classes.  This one also focuses on the business side as well as the creative. You can have a creative business but if you don’t know how to promote and grow it, you will not get as much as you can from it.
We are also keeping ArtBizJam small so that its a more intimate retreat where individual  business or creative needs can be addressed.

How do you reconcile your passion of creating art with the business side of art?

All our art and creativeness comes from the right side of our brain. We tend to really love that area and want to stay there. But when our art is our business, we need to venture into the left side of brains. I know its not as much fun, that left side, but there are ways to make it that way.  We can be just as creative with the business side and that’s what I strive to do to make my business side as interesting as the creative part. Its all the same coin, just different sides, and I find it fun to flip it back and forth, well at least some of the time!

What are you looking forward to fun-wise with ArtBizJam?

Laughter and camaraderie! When ever a group of women get together, no matter what the reason from serious business to just relaxing, it always turns into laughter at some point.  And that’s especially true with artists. We become close knit as we get to know each other and that forms into friendships. We always enjoy getting together any time that we can. The laughter is the perk that always happens!

Atlanta Gift Market – Trends and Friends!

I just returned from the the Atlanta Gift Market, which is always a favorite trip of mine! There is always so much visually stimulating eye candy, swirls of color, and great times meeting up with friends.

The trends I saw this time in still bold colors, were bags. Bags, bags, bags, everywhere – tote bags and purses. The gift showrooms all had some kind of bag as well as jewelry and most likely some kind of clothing like a top or scarf. As far as motifs, the owl was still who-who-ing away.

ArtBizJam teachers

As artists, we have so much fun getting together and networking, and it’s vital to our business. (Who says you can’t have fun while working!) Since all of us teachers at ArtBizJam were at Market, Paula Joerling, who lives a couple of blocks from Market, had us all over (picture above – Anne Brown (Anne is the Director of Product Development of Studio M at Magnet Works), Lori Siebert, Paula and myself). We had a blast planning and talking about the ArtBizJam retreat that we are hosting in September. We also came up with lots of surprises for the retreat to make it even more fun and memorable.

ArtBizJam is an artist retreat being held in the coastal town of Destin, Florida, September 18-22, 2013. The focus will be on maximazing your business growth, creative time, as well as lots of fun, networking and great food. Please check out the ArtBizJam website to read all the details. Spaces are limited so please sign up soon if you plan to be a part of this “happening” so that you don’t miss out!

ArtBizJam Experience

The above image was created for us as a surprise by artist Robin Davis who is just as excited about ArtBizJam as we are and wanted to show all that you will experience at ArtBizJam! She captured it perfectly!

Have a color filled day!

To quote Albert Schweitzer (1875 -1965) In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Join us and light your inner fire! All information about this unique artist retreat can be found at ArtBizJam.

Due to the small intimate setting of this jam, spaces are limited, so BOOK EARLY to insure you will be a part of ArtBizJam!

Patriotism – Red, White & Blue Stars and StripesQuilt

A patriotic quilt is a wonderful way to show your love of our country. I designed this “Patriotism – Red, White & Blue” quilt so that you can sew it for every day use of for our patriotic holidays of July 4, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This patriotic quilt pattern is available through the WhimsyColor Shop.

Patriotism quilt, red white & blue

“Patriotism – Red, White & Blue, Stars and Stripes” quilt  is 59 1/2″ wide x 69 1/2″ high. The blocks can be adjusted to make the quilt larger or smaller or to use for table runners and placemats.  I used different red fabrics for the stripes to make it look a little scrappy.  You can make it more scrappy by using different blue fabrics for the star block backgrounds.  Its always fun to see how quilters can take a pattern and make it their own with their  fabric choices, making each quilt look so different from the other.  That’s just the nature of quilting though and what makes it such a great artisan craft!!

Sew a quilt of red, white and blue as a gift to a veteran to say thanks or for a special occasion.

Spring Quilt Market in Portland, Part 2

The International Quilt Market is always beautiful and filled with great products. The recent Spring Quilt Market in Portland, OR, was no exception. Here are some of the photos I took during market.

The first thing I notice when attending a Quilt Market in Portland is the beautiful flowers that are in bloom everywhere.  Rhododendron is always in bloom with spectacular colors and are in abundance outside the convention center.

I was working with Gutermann of USA while at market. I also decorated their booth and used some of my fabric collections with Quilting Treasures to make the quilts. (Most of these patterns are available for free here on my blog – Halloween, Bee Yourself quilt,  Bee Yourself Placemat, Birthday banner .)  I love Gutermann threads and heard the same comment from so many people during market. Our sewing machines also love Gutermann, so if yours is acting grouchy, try Gutermann threads to make it smile.

I was excited that my next fabric collection, “Wild Flower” with Quilting Treasures was being pre-sold at market. I can’t wait to show you pictures of this collection, so check back. A friend who also has fabrics with Quilting Treasures, J Wecker Frish, has a new fabric collection coming soon, “She Who Sews”.  As you can see in the picture below, it will be another fabulous collection .

She Who Sews Fabrics by J. Wecker Frisch

June Tailor, Inc always has a beautiful booth. The Hexagon Ruler ,”You Hexie Thing,” and Grid Marker are both fabulous quilting tools.  You can see the beautiful quilts and sewing that can be created using them.  Hexie’s are so hot in quilting!

Another product, the Swatch Buddies, caught my eye. These are reusable plastic cards that let you mount fabric swatches on one side and write swatch information on the other side.  You can shop for multiple projects at the same time by creating rings of Swatch Buddies for each project. You can also use these for your color palette when building your fabric stash. Another use it to attach them to a fabric bin so that you can see what fabrics are in the bin. I really think that there are many, many uses that they will be handy for.

This really cute tulle tutu was created by my friend Debi Schmitz for the Expo International booth  She used various accessory pieces from Expo International to decorate a bodice. Its so feminine!

The Pfaff USA sewing machine booth had several really unique and beautiful quilts on display. This one, “Positively Paisley”, is by Robyn Smith of Austin Sewing Machines.  She used a combination of free motion and quilting designs created with the 5D Quilt Designer software.

The quilt below, “Porcelain Peacock” in the Pfaff booth, was created by 5 ladies from The Quilting Hen. Its very dimension and textured.

Therm-o-Web had a really cute display of projects you can make using HeatnBond.

One of the benefits of having Quilt Market in Portland is that there is so much natural beauty in area. I could easily spend a week touring throughout Oregon. We did have a half day after setup to sight see and went to Multnomah Falls that is located about 30 minutes from Portland. This waterfall is so tall (620 feet) that its just about impossible to get the entire set of falls in a single photo. In the bottom photo, the small light speck on the right side of the bridge is me.

The mountains in Oregon and Washington are spectacular and I had a terrific view of 3 of Washington’s mountains from my window shortly after takeoff.  Mt. St. Helens is the flat topped mountain at the left.  Mt. Rainier is in the center top with Mt. Adams at the right side.  They may be hard to pick out at first glance due to the puffy clouds.

Now, I’m already looking forward to Fall Quilt Market in Houston.

Beautiful Quilts on Exhibit at Spring International Quilt Market, Portland, Part 1

I spent several days in Portland, OR last week for the Spring International Quilt Market. I love the Portland area. Its so beautiful with the flowers and the green, green landscape everywhere. Inside the convention center, it was beautiful as well with the quilts and fabrics which were all quite colorful.

I will start my review of market with some of the spectacular quilts that were displayed in the exhibits. I don’t have them all, unfortunately, but am sure that you will love these.

Dreamtime quilt by Antonia Hering of The Netherlands

This first quilt will knock your socks off if you could see it in person.  Its called “Dreamtime” and was created by Antonia Hering of  Noorn, Noord-Holland, The Netherlands. It won first place for the “Innovative Applique” category. It is based on Antonia’s love of  the country of Australia. It is telling a dreamtime Aboriginal story and the legend of the three sisters in the blue mountains and the beautiful colors of Australia. Below are some close-ups of the hand applique and hand quilting. The techniques used were hand quilted, hand appliqued and hand embroidered. The applique circles covering the quilt were approximately 1/2 inch wide.

The quilt below, “Make You Happy”, is by Brigit Aubeso Bell-Lloch of Girona, Catalunya, Spain. This was another winner, winning first place in the “Art-People, Portraits and Figures” category. You can see why it was a winner – its spectacular! The techniques used are machine pieced and appliqued, free motion machine embroidered and machine quilted. Brigit based the quilt on a photo of her mother found in a box of old family photos. Her mother was 20 years old in the picture. Brigit made the quilt as a present to her mother.

“Weezie’s Wildflowerd #17” won Honorable Mention in the “Arts-Miniature” category. Created by Laura Wasilowski of Elgin, IL, the quilt is based on a rare wildflower that is only found in Laura’s backyard and imagination. The techniques used are fused applique, hand embroidered, and machine quilted. I love the colors.

The colorful and whimsy “Tutti Frutti Village”, by Susan Bleiweiss of Upton, MA, won Honorable Mention in the “Art-Whimsical” category. Sue was inspired to create the quilt by a digital sketch that she did on her iPad. She used her hand-dyed sandwashed cotton fabrics in the quilt. The techniques used are fused, raw-edge appliqued with machine stitching, and machine quilted. Sue has also created more “Tutti Frutti” quilts in a series that you can see on her blog.

Susan Cane created “Mabel – 1952 REO” from a photo taken by her husband of the first antique truck they bought together. It won second place in the “Art-Pictorial” category. The techniques used are machine appliqued, machine quilted, and painted. I love the layout with the trucks superimposed on each other.

Lynn Czaban of Vancouver, WA, was inspired to create this quilt “Raven Blanet” (with permission) from a photograph by Edward Curtis, who devoted his life to documenting the traditional lifestyle of the American Indian. This 1910 photograph of the Nez Perce Chief, Raven Blanket is one of his many images in the Library of Congress. Techniques used are machine appliqued, fused, thread painted, and machine quilted. “Raven Blanket” won Honorable Mention in the “Art-People, Portraits and Figures” categories.

Betty New of Naples, FL created “A Luthier’s Dream” using the techniques of turned-edge appliqued and free-motion machine quilted. Betty’s husband and son both play guitar thus inspiring her to use guitar bodies as the basis of design, focusing the design on line and value. Another winner, this quilt won first place in the “Art-Abstract, Small” category.

A new slant on the Log Cabin block, “Around the Clock” by Karen Echmeier of Kent, CT, won Honorable Mention in the “Art-Whimsical” category. Karen substituted the center square of the Log Cabin block with a village, which was also used in the border, so that it would be like walking around the block of several different towns. The techniques used are fabric collaged under tulle, topstitched, and machine quilted.

“Fantasy Seedpods”, by Elizabeth Camping of McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia, won Honorable Mention in the “Art-Abstract, Small” category. The design process started with the words, then followed with drawings of imaginary seedpods. The background colorwash effect is shaded to enhance and draw the eye to the seedpods. The techniques used are needleturn hand appliqued, hand embroidered, and machine quilted.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these amazing quilts. Its always such a treat to walk the aisles of  The International Quilt Market. Please check back as I will post a Part 2 soon, featuring some of the photos I took of the show itself.
