Say “Merry Christmas” with a Christmas Stockings Quilt.

One of the traditional and fun activities of Christmas is hanging the stockings to be filled by Santa. I have a collection of stockings that I have made over the years or received as gifts, all in a variety of techniques including sewing, quilting, applique, embellishment, embroidery, cross stitch and needlepoint.  With stockings on my mind, I designed this “Christmas Stockings” quilt pattern.

Christmas Stockings Quilt

This quilt pattern was created for the Quilt Dash, a fun way to visit online quilt shops.  It starts Monday, December 15, 2014  and runs through December 28. This fun Christmas quilt pattern is available for purchase through Phyllis’ Etsy WhimsyColor store.

This pieced patchwork quilt, sized 46 ¾” x 58″, with 12 blocks. It’s easy to adjust if you want to make it larger or smaller.  I designed it to be a scrappy quilt so that you can use a multitude of fabrics or the scraps you  have on hand.

I hope you join the Quilt Dash and use this pattern  to make your Christmas stockings by creating a heirloom quilt.

Merry Christmas and happy quilting!

Halloween Quilting with this Spooky Ghost Pattern!

It’s the time of year for little ghosts and goblins to ring our doorbell. I love to see all the cute little costumes, especially on toddlers. It’s also fun to decorate for Halloween and with that in mind, I designed this Halloween “Spooky Ghosts”  quilt that is easy to make and is a good size for a wall hanging.

Kitties and Yoga Combine for New Fabrics!

I always get excited with a new fabric collection and am extremely so with my next collection Purr-fect Balance. Created in bold colors, Purr-fect Balance has 16 cats in yoga poses along with some snarky names of yoga poses created in kitty lingo.

Purr-fect Balance Kitty Yoga fabrics

I designed this collection for Quilting Treasures. Since it’s still in printing, Quilting Treasures is taking pre-orders from quilt and fabric stores for shipping in November 2014. If you have a favorite fabric store, you can check with them on ordering this collection.

Cat Yoga quilt

A couple of months ago, I received small sample pieces of each fabric to review for approval. Not to let any scrap go to waste, I designed and created a small quilt to show at Quilt Market.  I don’t have a pattern available for this one, but will work up one soon. In addition, I will let you know about free quilt and sewing patterns to go with these fabrics.

My kitty was the inspiration behind these fabrics although his poses were mostly curling up in sleep. But he did have some great sleep poses and funny positions. RIP Kitty Kat.

I hope that you will add some furry love to your quilting and sewing!

A Step Back in Time

I decided to take a day away from my studio this week for a “Girls Day Trip”. We planned a trip to a small town that we could drive to within an hour or two. After considering our options, we decided on the town of Scottsboro, AL, which is approximately 127 miles away. We had an ulterior motive – shopping. (We are women after all.) But the best stop was for lunch at an old-fashioned soda fountain.

Paynes Soda Fountain Scottsboro

Payne’s Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain is an authentic old-fashioned soda fountain. It is 147 years old and still has that vintage feel of stepping back in time. I guess pulling out my iPhone for pictures was a little out of step, though.

Paynes Soda Fountain front windowDeciding on Payne’s for lunch was easy. An internet search by one of my friends, Jan,  pulled up a review showing a very high rating. After eating there, we definitely agreed. Two of us had BLT’s which were delicious. The other two had different choices and also loved theirs.

Paynes Soda fountain stoolsI love this row of soda stools and the counter. We would have loved to eaten at the counter but couldn’t talk as much if we were spread out!

Ice cream at Paynes Soda Fountain

And of course, being a soda fountain, there was ice cream.  The chalk board had a long list of flavors and types – shakes, sundaes, malts, floats, splits, and much more. Jan ordered this dish of scoops. I just love the colors – they make a great color scheme for art or decorating.

Sample ice cream sample PaynesI was so full that I was going to pass on ice cream even though I really wanted some. The hostess suggested a very small scoop.  It was just a few small bites of Butter Pecan and enough to satisfy my craving.

Girls trip to ScottsboroAnd here we are! Starting at the right, Vicky, Jan, the owner, Jeannine and myself. We knew we were in for a treat talking to the owner. When she came to our table, one of us asked “what are you known for” and she answered “bad advise”. She was a delight and gave us a lot of attention and information about the restaurant.

Although we planned to stop at any spot we found interesting during our trip, our main goal was the “Unclaimed Baggage” store. None of us had been and wanted to see what it was like as it’s where all the lost airline luggage ends up. I thought I might find a piece from my luggage lost many years ago, LOL.  The store had lots of items, was clean and organized, and had much more product than from airlines. They said that the items came from anything that involved travel and included a lot of new things (from lost containers?).  It was kind of like a thrift store on steroids! We didn’t buy much, mainly a few books (I just started the new Dean Koontz book that I bought). I bought a lot of very inexpensive costume jewelry to tear apart and make into other things, maybe add to quilts.  Who knows, but at a couple of dollars each, it was too good to pass up. You know how crafters and artists are, add a little sparkly, beads, etc. and our eyes glaze over.

But the bottom line is that we had a blast, just talking about anything and everything that came to mind with a lot of laughs. A day like this is good for the soul!

Here’s to the power of girlfriends!

Quilt Cutting Rulers For Beautiful, Fun Quilts

When I attend Quilt Market, I always go by the June Tailor booth and did so again at the Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh. I love their range of accessories for quilters, including their unique rulers, of which they have many. And of course, I always enjoy chatting with the gorgeous Jill Repp.

Jill Tailor booth at Quilt Market

The June Tailor booth is always so well put together and full of color as well as new products. Two new quilting rulers caught my eye and will be a great plus for a quilter.

June Tailor Charming Circles Quilt ruler

This quilting ruler, Charming Circles, can be used in a variety of techniques to aid in circle and curved quilting.

Closeup of Charming Circles Quilt

Here’s a close up of the sample techniques you can easily use with this ruler to give a fabulous quilt or other sewing project – raw edge piecing, regular piecing, and appliqué. Circles are hard to cut and sew so this will be a huge help!

Twist N Stitch Quilt tool

The other new ruler that I loved is Twist ‘n Stitch. I’m a fan of pin wheels so I will put this ruler to use a lot.

Twist N Stitch quilt ruller

With this ruler, you can create 5 sizes of blocks, from 3 1/2 inch blocks to 10 1/2 inch blocks. I love the way the blocks fit together and it reminds me of a puzzle. Without this ruler, it would definitely be a puzzle to put together but is so easy with the steps below.

Step 1 Twist N Stitch Quilt

You can see by the step-out boards that Jill is showing, how simple it is to use the Twist ‘n Stitch ruler!  The basic step is square block pieces sewn together. Now, how easy is that!

Twist N Stirch Quilt Ruler step 2

You then use the ruler to cut out your squares aligning the cut out areas as show above with the easy ruler guides.  The board on the left shows the blocks that were cut out in the black area and then lined up on the board on the right side.

Step 3 in using Twist N Stitch Quilt Ruler

Then in the last step, all you have to do is straighten the blocks side by side and sew together.  So while this quilt looks complicated, it’s not. This would also make a good quilt for guilds to make for their charity quilts. Thanks to Jill for showing me the ins and outs of these great rulers!

While I’m late in posting about spring Quilt Market, fall market in Houston is rapidly approaching. I hope it cools off a little before then as Houston can be hot. But I’m looking forward to it, whether hot or cold.

Stay cool!

Sights at Atlanta Gift Market

I attended the Atlanta Gift Market last week, a trip that I always enjoy and wanted to share some of my photos.  I love to attend market and while there, check out new products and trends, as well as meet up with friends. Atlanta is considered the best of all the gift markets.

Reindeer cody Foster

Needless to say, July in Atlanta is so NOT cool, so I really enjoyed seeing Christmas with snow in some of the showroom windows.  I felt cooler just looking at these windows. This white reindeer was in the Cody Foster and Co. showroom.  This reindeer, combined with snow-covered white trees, made me instantly feel cooler.

Reindeer Mark Roberts

This whole display in the Mark Roberts showroom was really refreshing and had me on the verge of singing “Jingle Bells” (well not really since I can’t carry a tune). They did have another deer that was singing Christmas songs, but I didn’t join in.

Vintage Bicycle

I love looking at the displays at Market. This vintage bicycle was standing outside the Vintage showroom and was one of several vintage type bicycles I saw displayed throughout Market.

Elephant Kalalou

The Kalalou showroom is always on my list to visit as it’s always fun to see what they will display at the entrance to their showroom. This huge elephant greeted their visitors this time.

Jane Maday Evergreen Baby

I walked the market a little while with friend and talented artist Jane Maday.  We went by the Evergreen Enterprises showroom to see the display of the very cute baby products using her art.

Artist Meetup in Atlanta July

A bunch of us artists meet up during market to catch up with each other and to participate in lots of talking. This group includes Genevieve Gail (standing), Shelly Comiskey, Karen Embry, Chad Barrett, Dan DiPaolo, Robin Davis, Caroline Simas, Paula Joerling, Jan Beach, and myself.

I also returned home with lots of work, so it’s back to the “drawing board”.
